Being on the waiting list is the first step.
Currently, we cannot estimate how long your wait might be. It depends on a number of factors. Your placement on the waiting list is available on the “Waiting List Status” page of your MyPortal account.
Here are some of the basic steps moving forward with a Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8/voucher).
- Update Your Application
It is important that applicants on SHA waiting lists keep their contact information current. If you would like to submit a change of address, or other updates on the information provided on your original application, please submit the update using My Portal at https://myportal.spokanehousing.org/. - When you receive a letter or email about updating your status, be sure to do so within the timeline provided or you will be removed from the waiting list.
- Once you are at the top of the waiting list, we will process your household’s information and ask for supporting documents including picture ID, SSN cards, birth certificates, and proof of income, assets over $50,000, and medical or childcare expenses.
- If you are eligible and approved for a voucher, you will attend a briefing and receive your voucher.
- With your voucher, you will go out and find a unit (it can possibly be the one you are living in) and return a RFTA form for an inspection to be scheduled.
- Attend the inspection, if it passes you can lease up and move in! Be sure we get a copy of your signed lease.
- Then, the landlord has to sign a HAP agreement so we can pay them directly for our portion of your rent each month.
Here are some of the basic steps moving forward with a Project Based Voucher (PBV).
- Update Your Application
It is important that applicants on SHA waiting lists keep their contact information current. If you would like to submit a change of address, or other updates on the information provided on your original application, please submit the update using My Portal at https://myportal.spokanehousing.org/. - Once your name comes to the top of the waiting list for the next available unit according to bedroom size, we send your contact information to the property. If it is for a chronically homeless unit, we will verify your homelessness first.
- When you are contacted by the property for a project based unit, be sure to complete their application process within the timeline provided or you will be removed from the waiting list.
- Once approved by the property, they submit your application to us and we will process your household’s information.
- If you are eligible and approved for a voucher, you will attend a briefing to sign for your project based voucher.
- Then, you can sign a lease and move into your project based unit!
