Press Release: 2/1/2012
Update on Programs Administered by Spokane Housing Authority
These are
difficult and challenging times. Each of us have been affected by
economic issues and reductions in government programs and funding.
The Spokane
Housing Authority has been notified of significant cuts from the
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development which were imposed
by Congress late last year.
In November,
Congress trimmed $650 million from the Section 8 Housing Choice
Voucher Program.
These cuts will
affect our ability to administer the rent assistance program at the
current level. The Spokane Housing Authority sustained a loss of
over $2.2 million in funding for the second half of 2011.
Effective April
1, we will change our occupancy standards so we can continue to
serve our current clients and, perhaps, even more people as the
demand grows higher.
These new
standards will pay rent based on one bedroom funding for every two
people occupying a residence.
We have no
intention of dropping anyone from the Section 8 program. But, we
must be good stewards of the funding that is available.
Please plan to
attend a meeting on
February 15,
2012 at
1:30 P.M.to discuss the change in in occupancy standards.
The meeting
will take place in the large conference room at SHA's 55 West
Mission office.
We look forward
to continuing to serve as many people as we can including new
clients, even with these Congressionally mandated cuts.
